Loved your article about Vitamin D. I've been a huge proponent of D ever since I inadvertently "interviewed" Carole Baggerly who runs the website: GrassrootsHealth dot org. I was visiting her daughter and she asked me how I was. I responded that I was terrible because I was on cold # 87 for the year. With three kids in elementary school, I was getting sick so often that I could remember each of the times in great detail.
Carole told me that she had recently embarked on a mission to research Vitamin D and its benefits. She suggested I may have low Vitamin D levels and if I improved them, I would probably get sick less often.
I immediately started taking Vitamin D3 (5,000 IUs) until my levels were around 60. I was taking the D3 faithfully for many years. From the time I spoke to Carole to the next time I got sick was 6.5 years! And I'll be honest and say that the only reason I got sick is I started getting very lazy about taking D3.
I started down a path of laziness and last year I got sick 4 times--and without the benefit of young children to blame.
Since February of this year, I've been taking between 5,000 IUs- 10,000 IUs (doctor recommendation based on my levels). I'm waiting to see how much improved my levels are.
One thing I would add is that there are many articles suggesting that D3 should be taken with K2 and magnesium. From what I've read, levels of D3 can be increased far faster when taken with the largest meal of the day.
